Groupon…
One of my favorite tongue-in-cheek phrases through the years has been “You can’t afford NOT to buy it” when referring to things that you really don’t NEED, but they are such a good deal, you really can’t pass them up. Unfortunately, I always get roped in. Lately by Groupon.
So what is Groupon? Well, Groupon offers some amazing deals, for example: a $12 coupon for pizza for $5 (save 58%), 10 specialty coffees for $10 (regularly ~$3 per coffee), or $95 of salsa dancing lessons for $39 (5 lessons!). But I don’t NEED pizza, I don’t NEED specialty coffees, and I don’t NEED salsa dancing lessons, but they are such a good deal, I can’t afford NOT to buy them.
As the name implies though, there is a catch: in order for the deal to happen, a certain number of people have to buy in. You can see that plenty of people were in on today’s deal by looking at the bottom of the screenshot below.
Each deal runs for 24 hours (72 hours over the weekend) and if enough people don’t order during that 24 hours, they don’t charge you for it and the deal fails.
To keep up with the ever-changing deals, Groupon will send you a daily email or you can even follow them on Twitter.
One thing to note is that Groupon is based on the city you live in and currently they are in over 50 cities. However, you aren’t restricted to your city only. Traveling to San Francisco for a business trip? Why not get a massage for 50% off while you are there? Got a grandmother in Miami who would enjoy some fancy Italian food? Grab a $40 gift certificate for $15 from Groupon. And don’t forget, Christmas is coming up in a little over 10 months, so why not get your shopping done early? Yes, Groupons can be given as gifts, just be sure to watch those expiration dates.
Couple of other cool Groupon features:
- They have a discussion forum where you can discuss the current deal. Don’t think its a good deal? Sound off in the forums.
- Are you a small business owner? Figure out if Groupon could work to bring your business a bunch of new customers.
- They have one of the most amazing contests I’ve ever heard of. It is so crazy, I’m not sure how they would find someone to participate. Essentially, they are willing to pay someone $100,000 to live solely off of Groupons for a year. Want to buy clothes? Better hope there is a Groupon for a clothing store. Want to eat? Hopefully food comes up. They do allow the participant to barter with Groupons as well, allowing the participant to get food and shelter by trading Groupons. Just crazy, nuts, insane.
I highly recommend Groupons, and you can head over and sign up now to find out what next deal coming down the pike is.
Have you used Groupons before? Got any favorite deals that you’ve received? Got any excuses as to why you aren’t signing up now?
